Ed Shermen
Photographer
Edward Sherman has been photographing since the age of fourteen. His foundation in photography includes undergraduate fine arts studies at Brooklyn College, additional coursework at the New School for Social Research under Lisette Model, and more than fifty years of photographic practice. A former United States Marine Corps photographer, Sherman developed a strong command of visualization and technical skill early in his career. In 1980, he completed an internship in broadcast journalism with the New York–based Community Film Workshop Council and later worked as a videographer and editor for NBC affiliate WNYT in Albany, New York.
Among the highlights of Sherman’s photographic career was serving as photographer for the New York City Police Department under Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. This appointment reflected the high regard for his skill and professionalism. During his NYPD years, he also photographed Pope Benedict XVI during the pontiff’s 2007 three-day visit to New York City. In the aftermath of 9/11, Sherman and his fellow NYPD photographers played an important role in documenting a city profoundly changed.
Sherman’s work has been widely exhibited in the United States and internationally, including at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Columbia University, the National Museum of Dance, the Louvre Museum, and venues in Nigeria, Canada, and France.
