Jennifer Ivey
Painter, Mixed Media
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, Jennifer Ivey brings to her work a distinctly New York sensibility shaped by varied urban environments, family influences, and a lifelong engagement with visual culture. Her earliest formal introduction to art came through the Brooklyn Museum’s Children’s Art Program, while her creative foundation was deepened by her father’s love of theater and an eclectic home filled with original paintings by emerging artists.
Ivey studied Art Education at Pratt Institute, where she also studied painting with William T. Williams, and later continued her studies with Anthony Tone at The New School. She went on to teach in the New York City public school system as both an art teacher and teacher consultant.
Working across multiple media, Ivey has designed puppets for theater and feather jewelry for Nina Simone and Melba Tolliver. Her fine art reflects an enduring fascination with facial expression, group dynamics, and the emotional resonance of old photographs. Through these visual references, she explores memory, personality, and the subtle dramas of human interaction.
Ivey has exhibited with Black Women of Brooklyn, the Long Island Black Artists Association, and Blacker Than Thou/Cross Culture, among others. She lives and works in Hollis, Queens
